Where do i find a 2l 16v Engine
E plate onwards astra GTE 16v First ones had coscast heads (more on that later) Then Cav GSI 2000 and 2000 4wd, up to J plate, then cav sri from J plate to L plate had 2.0 EX (red top) From H to M the calibra 16v had a red top, the later ones, (L onward) have distributorless ingnition packs ( featured on very last cav GSi's as well) Last but not least as fitted STANDARD to the Lotus Nova (yes they do exist) ALL turbo engines up to R reg (calibra) and M reg (Cav turbo's) were NON ECOTEC even if they say they are. Now back to coscast heads: fitted to early astra GTE 16v's E and F plate. Very rare, VIRTUALLY never go pourous unlike normal c 20 XE ones. Very slightly modded to give early GTE's the magic 156 bhp figure. ALL Turbos, ecotec or not fitted with coscast heads (like mine :) contrary to what dai says, the 20XE heads are still VERY good and don't go porous that often.
Will it fit under a mini front end ?
Yes/No :) The 2.0l 16v Vauxhall engine will NOT fit under a any standard mini front(normal/clubman) with out some cutting of : 1) The bualk head 2) Extending the wings if using a normal mini front or some of the bottom panel on a clubman front. The AMT frame will not need any mods to the baulk head so you WILL need to make a longer front end if you want a normal mini front. In my case its is around 4 inchs longer. You can by a fibre glass one which is allready 6 1/2 inches longer. As i said before if you want a clubman front you will need to modify the bottom panel to miss the subframe and maybe the rad etc... depending on your layout. You must remember that the Vauxhall engine was not designed for a mini !!
Who does Vuaxhall/VTEC Conversions ?
Two companies that i know of. : Vauxhall conversions : AMT - 01246 273929 AllSpeed - 01773 742819 VTEC Conversions : AMT - 01246 273929 Watsons www.watsonsrally.co.uk SAE www.saeminivtec.co.uk P&L www.plmini.co.uk I have bought AMT's kit as in my opinion there frame is better because it is a purpose made tube frame where Allspeed is a modified metro subframe, but please do not take my word for things. Take a look at both kits and make your mind up. Most kits come with one piece drive shafts. Please visit the forums for views of all kits.
How much will it cost ?
Depend on how much you spend !, If you buy a kit plus some suspension parts, that will be about 1500 ukpounds. Then add another 1000 ukpounds for the engine and other bits and bobs. And then just add any more costs on .. e.g. rebuilding of car etc... it all really depends on what you have to start with. Take a look at my budget page for an idea.
What gearbox to use ?
The F20 box is the one most people go for, as it gives a good ish gear ratio : F20 1st 3.55 2nd 2.16 3rd 1.48 4th 1.13 5th 0.89 Rev 3.33 3.32 Final Drives : F20 = 3.57 And go for a F28 if you want 6 speeds :) Don't forget it also depends on what wheel combination you are going to use, most people opt for 13inch wheels as it helps get the traction down on the ground.
Do I use Fuel Injection or Carbs ?
Again depends on how much you have to spend , you can easily spend 2000ukpound on a good injection system. There are cheaper versions out there though. As for carbs... you can get a pair or 40's or 45's for 100 ukpounds (2nd hand) and then you just need a manifold. I made mine out of the injection system manifold. Also remember to cost for a rolling road after the car is running as it WILL need one.
What about the ignition ?
If you have an expensive EFI system then that should cope with ignition as well, Other wise you will need a distributor of a Vauxhall caviler or Astra (mk2 ish) This then bolts into the end of the head on the older type 16v engines. On the newer (ECO TEC) type engines then you will have to do allot of mods to fit a dizzy. Take a look at the gallery.
Is the wheel track changed at all ?
No, if you use the AMT subframe then the suspension points are in the same place ( not sure on the other kit but i think they are the same). So the wheels should not come out any further than before.
What do you do about the gear linkage ?
The easiest thing to do is use the Vauxhall linkage and mount it inside the car. The linkage rod will have to be cut shorter and then welded together again. You will also have to cut a hole in the baulk head for it to past through.
What happens with the brake master cylinder ?
As far as I know if you use a bought manifold the carbs will get in the way. If you have bought the AMT pedal box you then can mount some new cylinders inside the car. As cost was sort of on my side :) , I made my own manifold and the carbs SHOULD just miss the brake master cylinder.
What do you do about the clutch ?
In my case I am running a cable clutch, I cut the top off a caviler pedal and have then welded that to the mini pedal. You then need to cut a hole in the baulk head for the cable to pass through. At the time of writing this I am not sure it works yet :). The other option is to buy a pedal box from AMT , this is then all done for you.(about 60 ukpounds ish)
What is a starting point on the suspesion setup ?
These are from Rich's car : Tie Rod. Bolt in bottom arm to to RJ Bracket/Bolt 350mm Bottom arm. RJ at frame to lower BJ nut 265mm Rear top arm. Bolt at frame to bolt with front top arm 150 Front top arm. Bolt at frame to top BJ nut 170mm approx (bit tricky to measure) Clearance from 6" wheel to C/Over 1 inch Distance from top centre of C/Over to bodywork 52mm.
